Dr. Ana Sofia Varela obtained her bachelor in Chemistry at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 2008. Later she did a master in “fuels and energy for the future” at the Autonomous University of Madrid. She received her PhD from the Technical University of Denmark in 2013 where she work on the thesis “The catalysis of CO2 electroreduction and related processes” In 2014 she joined Prof Strasser’s group at the Technical University of Berlin, where she studied different materials as electrocatlyst for CO2 reduction. In December 2016 she joined the UNAM’s institute of Chemistry.


  • Synthesis and characterization of new material and their application as electro-catalyst for efficient energy conversion.
  • Study of electro-catalytic process in particular the CO2 electroreduction into synthesis gas and hydrocarbons.
