Dr. Eduardo Hernández Vázquez

Químico Farmacéutico-Biológico por la Facultad de Química de la UNAM, donde obtuvo la medalla Gabino Barreda. Realizó estudios de Maestría y Doctorado en Ciencias Químicas, con especialidad en Química Farmacéutica. Posteriormente, efectuó una estancia posdoctoral en el Instituto de Química y, más adelante, trabajó como profesor en la UAM campus Xochimilco. Se incorporó al Instituto de Química en el año 2020 como Investigador y jefe de grupo del laboratorio de Química Farmacéutica Orgánica, cuyas líneas de investigación se centran en el diseño y preparación de compuestos con actividad farmacológica contra enfermedades de interés clínico. Particularmente, se buscan nuevos antimicrobianos (inhibidores del a enzima FabI y de la percepción del cuórum) y antidiabéticos (antagonistas del receptor de canabinoides 1). Actualmente, ha publicado 27 artículos en revistas indizadas y es miembro del Sistema Nacional de investigadores (Nivel II).

Pharmaceutical and Biological Chemist from the School of Chemistry, UNAM (awarded the “Gabino Barreda” decoration). Hernández-Vázquez obtained his PhD in Chemical Sciences, focusing on Medicinal Chemistry. He joined the Institute of Chemistry in 2020 as the leader of the Organic and Medicinal Chemistry Laboratory. His research focuses on the design and synthesis of compounds with pharmacological activity against diseases of clinical interest. Specifically, we synthesize antimicrobials (inhibitors of the FabI enzyme and quorum sensing blockers) and antidiabetics (cannabinoid receptor 1 antagonists). Dr. Hernández-Vázquez has published 27 articles and is a member of the National System of Researchers of Mexico (Level II).

Dr. Alejandro Cordero Vargas

Originario de la ciudad de Puebla, donde cursó la licenciatura en Químico Farmacobiólogo (QFB) en la Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (generación 94-99). Realizó su tesis en el año 2000 bajo la supervisión de la Dra. Leticia Quintero. Obtuvo el doctorado en 2005 por la Université de Paris XI (Francia), bajo la supervisión del Prof. Samir Z. Zard. Posteriormente, realizó una estancia posdoctoral en la Universitat de Barcelona (España) de 2005 a 2007, bajo la supervisión del Prof. Josep Bonjoch.

En 2008 comenzó su carrera como investigador independiente en el Instituto de Química de la UNAM, en donde actualmente es investigador titular y pertenece al Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI), nivel 2.

Su investigación se enfoca en la síntesis orgánica, con particular interés en el uso de las reacciones de radicales libres y en la síntesis de carbohidratos con actividad farmacológica. Es autor de 30 artículos de investigación en revistas internacionales, 1 capítulo de libro, 1 patente y varios artículos de divulgación. Ha dirigido tesis de licenciatura, maestría y doctorado. Así mismo, es profesor de la Facultad de Química y del posgrado en Ciencias Químicas de la UNAM.

Alejandro Cordero-Vargas was born in Puebla, Mexico. After undergraduate studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (Mexico) under the supervision of Prof. Leticia Quintero, he joined the group of Prof. Samir Z. Zard (France), where he obtained his Ph.D. in 2005. Between 2005 and 2007, he worked as a postdoctoral associate in Josep Bonjoch’s group at the Universitat de Barcelona (Spain). In 2008, he started his independent career at the Instituto de Química, UNAM (Mexico), where he currently works as associate professor. His research interest focuses on the application of free-radical chemistry to the total synthesis of natural products.

Dr. Arturo Jiménez Sánchez

Los proyectos en curso se centran en el desarrollo de sistemas moleculares fluorescentes y de nuevas plataformas bioanalíticas involucrando aspectos de diversas disciplinas que van desde la química orgánica, la biología química hasta la nanotecnología. La entrega de moléculas en las células se puede hacer más precisa con vectores específicamente diseñados y sintetizados para cada compartimento intracelular. Nuestro trabajo se ha centrado en la orientación subcelular con vectores versátiles basados en péptidos o moléculas pequeñas que promueven una captación celular eficiente para estudios in vitro o in vivo.

Academic Summary

Ongoing projects focus on the development of fluorescent molecular systems and new bioanalytical platforms involving aspects of various disciplines ranging from organic chemistry, chemical biology to nanotechnology. The delivery of molecules into cells can be made more precise with vectors specifically designed and synthesized for each intracellular compartment. Our work has focused on subcellular targeting with versatile peptide- or small-molecule-based vectors that promote efficient cellular uptake for in vitro or in vivo studies.

Obtuvo el título de Químico en la Facultad de Química de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México en el 2000, el grado de Doctor Ciencias en la especialidad de Ciencias Químicas en el Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del I.P.N en el 2005 dentro del grupo del Dr. Eusebio Juaristi Cosío. Asimismo, realizó una estancia postdoctoral en The Scripps Research Institute dentro del grupo del Dr. Albert Eschenmoser y del Dr. Ramanarayanan Krishnamurthy del 2007 al 2009. Desde 2009 se incorporó al Instituto de Química de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, donde actualmente es Investigador Titular en el departamento de Química Orgánica.

Prof. Hernández-Rgropodríguez received his B.Sc. in Chemistry degree from the School of Chemistry at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM) in 2000. He earned his Ph.D. in chemistry while working in Prof. Eusebio Juaristi’s group at the Center of Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del I.P.N.) in 2005. He was a postdoctoral fellow in Prof. Albert Eschenmoser and Prof. Krishnamurthy Ramanarayanan’s research group at The Scripps Research Institute. He joined the Institute of Chemistry at UNAM in 2009.

Dr. Roberto Martínez

El Dr. Martínez obtuvo el título de Químico y el grado de Maestro en Ciencias en la Facultad de Química de la UNAM, después de lo cual ingresó como investigador en el Instituto de Química de la misma institución. Posteriormente adquirió el grado de Doctor en Ciencias Químicas (Química Orgánica) en el CINVESTAV (IPN) bajo la dirección de la Dr. Eusebio Juaristi. Actualmente es investigador Titular C, Profesor de Asignatura B, e Investigador Nacional Emérito del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores.

Desde 1977 es Investigador en el Instituto de Química de la UNAM, adscrito al Departamento de Química Orgánica. Su trayectoria científica de 50 años incluye investigaciones en áreas de la fitoquímica, síntesis heterocíclica, diseño de moléculas bioactivas y espectrometría de masas, que le han permitido publicar más de 150 artículos en revistas indexadas y la obtención de 2 patentes, además de presentar conferencias nacionales, internacionales y de divulgación.

Dr. Martínez obtained a degree in Chemistry and a Master of Science at the Faculty of Chemistry of the UNAM, after which he entered as a researcher at the Institute of Chemistry of the same institution. Later he acquired the Doctor of Chemical Sciences (Organic Chemistry) degree at CINVESTAV (IPN) under the direction of Dr. Eusebio Juaristi. He is a Titular Researcher C, Professor of Subject B, and National Emeritus Researcher of the National System of Researchers.

Since 1977 he has been a Researcher at the UNAM Institute of Chemistry, attached to the Department of Organic Chemistry. His 50-year scientific career includes research in the areas of phytochemistry, heterocyclic synthesis, design of bioactive molecules, and mass spectrometry, which have allowed him to publish more than 150 articles in indexed journals and obtain two patents, in addition to presenting national, international and dissemination conferences.

El Dr. Marcos Martínez García realizó sus estudios de doctorado en la Universidad Estatal de Moscú, Lomonosov. Hizo investigaciones en la Universidad de California, en los Ángeles bajo la dirección del profesor Fred Wudl. Desde 1993 es investigador del Instituto de Química. El Dr. Martínez ha publicado 197 artículos internacionales y es Nivel III del SNI.

El Dr. Miranda obtuvo el título de químico en 1994 en la Facultad de Química de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México y el grado de Doctor por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México en el año 2000. Zard en el ICSN-CNRS en Gif-sur-Yvette, Francia, ingresó al Instituto de Química de la UNAM en el año de 2001 y donde actualmente es Investigador Titular C.

Dr. Luis Ángel Polindara García

El Dr. Luis Angel Polindara García curso los estudios de licenciatura en Química. Posteriormente, realizó la Maestría en Ciencias Químicas en el Instituto de Química de la UNAM en el área de Productos Naturales y sus estudios doctorales en el mismo instituto en el área de síntesis orgánica. Realizó dos estancias postdoctorales, la primera en la Facultad de Química de la UNAM y la segunda en el Depto. de Química del CINVESTAV. Luego de impartir clases en el Tecnológico de Monterrey en el Departamento de Biotecnología e Ingeniería Química, se incorporó en Junio de 2016 al Instituto de Química de la UNAM como investigador asociado “C” de tiempo completo adscrito al departamento de Química orgánica. En la actualidad se desempeña como Investigador Titular “A” de Tiempo Completo (Definitivo).

Dr. Luis Angel Polindara García is studying for a degree in Chemistry.
